PERJURY ALLEGED
CONTRACT DISPUTE ; : (By Telegraph—Press Association) DANNEVIRKE, 24th October. There was an unusual development in a case in the Magistrate's Court to. day, in which two builders, both of Dannevirke, were the principals. James Joseph 'Anderson proceeded against James Humphreys for £62 17s, being balance alleged to be due in connection with a building contract. The defendant in evidence alleged that he had made two payments to Anderson of £SO each, and* had obtained receipts for them. A witness was called who said Humphreys had asked him to give evidence on his behalf against Anderson and to say that he had seen Humphreys hand oyer £SO to Anderson. Witness said he had told Humphreys it was absolute perjury; he was not going to risk gefting six months in gaol. He had never been a witness of such a transaction.
His Worship declared that he disbelieved defendant's evidence. He was most unreliable, and his evidence most unsavoury. The defendant had committed perjury, and his Worship made an order that all the documents in the case be impounded pending further inquiry.
Judgment on the claim was given for he plaintiff for £6O.
