Beau Cavalier continues to get through plenty of useful work on Riccarton -tracks without being required to shew his best pace. He was the best galloper this morning. In a trial over a miie vf Hh Tarleton he registered Imin 47 2 ssec,

and passing rhe post he held, an advantage of three-quarters of a length from his companion. . ' The Auckland crack is a hard puller in his work asmn liis races, and one result of his keen style of going is that he is apt to take risks at the fences until he settles down. This was exemplified in the Grand National Steeplechase lastyear when he narrowly escaped coming to grief at Cutts’s. fence on the'first time round.

After that, however, his exhibition of jumping was of the best. He has 121 b extra to carry this year, a substantial rise .over such a tiring journey, hut- it is a weight that would have had no terrors for some champions of the past. •

If he is allowed to bowl along by himself in the lead, that being the manner in which he runs all his races, he may win ags-in, While lie is being discussed chiefly as a candidate for the Grand National steeplechase, ,t is probable that Beau Cavalier will cake his place : n the Grand National Hurdles on the second day of the meeting.
