WINTER, GUP CANDIDATES IN ACTION

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Tlie Mail' )

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Fifteen horses with Winter Cup engagements were racing at Ricc.irton on Saturday, eleven of them- figuring in the Brahazon Handicap and lour in the minor events.

Royal Saxon, winriey of the .Brahazon Handicap, gave an attractive showing as lie was One, of the leaders all the way and he battled cri gamely to the finish. It was a good winter cup trial. /-First Sight, after a slow start, gradually made up Iris ground and he looked a winner inside the' distance, but lie failed to run on. It may be unwise to condemn him on this account as lie' had done rib racing for some time, and he should bn greatly improved by Saturday’s outing. Taboo* fan a solid race to finish third, arid'- he cannot bo overlooked for next week’s mile race. Malmsey was running on well in fourth- position and is a. possibility for something better. Tiiahine had . every chance, but failed at the erid, while Ovmlfawri collapsed when the straight '.urns reached, . after failing one of the leaders up to that, point. None of the others threatened danger. Nincompoop’s backers did riot grit a run for their ’money as lie was badly left. ,

Of the Winter Cup candidates who raced in i. the mi nor - events Kalos and Locarno did best. Both of these horses, may get some' money next week, though neither may- lie quite' up to winning -in the' best company. - Of the Grand National. hurdle horses who raced on Saturday Geneus gave a smooth performance in winning tlie Longbeach Hurdles,,but lie arid Brigadier Bill, who ran second, will both be troubled to go two miles and a half. Scion, on the other hand, made up a lot of ground over the last half mile, and this great stayer on the flat may. be a possibility. t Craigmore never looked dangerous, and he is not up to the top class at present. Red Fuchsia- was given a run on the 'fiat and demonstrated that he was in great form by showing up prominently at the end c*f the Brahazon Handicap in which he had a- number of Winter Cup horses behind him. ...,

'Four Grand National Steeplechase candidates took part in the Homeby Steeplechase, but the form fell far short of the best standard. , /. ... ~

Only Passin’ Through completed the course', without a mistake, and even when he was at his best he could not see out, the Grand National journey. Dubious lasted to the second to last fence. , He was a couple of lengths behind Passin’ Through when he Tell, and he, appeared to he well beaten, so ,that apart from his fall his performance did not/'look a good trial for the big race ndxt week. , Maunga and Greenstone fell after going about half' a mile, so that not enough was seen of them to furnish a good line, but neither enhanced his prospects for the next week.
