In the singles Colonel Dupre defeated R. Caughley 26-0, 26-2. - - , WANGANUI, 3rd February. Play in the croquet test matches commenced this morning before a good gal* lery of spectators. Before long the suu came out and the heat was almost unbearable. - The lawns were very glassv, with little grip. The English team won.all the tests, both in the singles and. in the doubles. The following are the results: — . , ;■ r '* Singles.—Miss Steele (England) defeated Stratton 26-20, 26-0; Colonel .Dupre defeated Caughley 26-0, 26-2; Sir Fran- 1 cis Wemyss defeated Murray 26-0, 26-15; Miss Retallack defeated Meredith 26-7, 26-24. Doubles.—The test doubles matches played between Coloney Dupre and Miss Steele and R. Caughley and H. Penn were of the briefest duration. In the first Miss Steele made eleven points straight off and Caughley missed Colonel Dupre made a round and pegged out,..- ': his opponents having only three shots. The second game ended with a;24-. point win, Caughley having made ttvo, points and having every chance of making more, hut he went to the boundary and let his opponents in. Wemyss and Miss Retallack. defeated Mrs Watkins, „ and Stratton in the first game by seven: points and in the second by 26-12. In the handicap doubles final, played between Mesdames Kirk and Johnson and Miss Steele and Mrs Newman, the latter won by 17 points. ... ... .
