CHILDREN SAVED FROM PERIL
MAN'S TIMELY ACTION When a horse bolted in the Great South Road, Auckland, on 24th January between the Harp of Erin and Green Lane, the lives of two young children were imperilled (says the “Star”). The horse was drawing a milk float and as it careered along in the vicinity of the Puriri Avenue intersection a man rushed out and waved his hat in an endeavour to stop it. The horse swerved across the road and knocked down Air Francis Carleton, an employee of the One Tree Hill Road Board. Air Carleton was fatally in’ jural. At the time of the runaway Messrs Carleton and Walshe, of the hoard’s staff, were working on the footpath with their backs towards the oncoming vehicle. Two small children were standing alongside watching them. Mr Walshe looked up just in time to grab a chi id under each arm, and threw himself with the children underneath a wire fence adjoining, thereby getting them out of danger. At the One Tree TTill Road Board meeting this week, a resolution was passed highly praising Air Walshe for his action, and a vote of sympathy for the relatives of Air Carleton was carried.
