BURWOOD MURDER

AN ARREST

(United Press Association) CIIPJSTCHURCH, This Day. Charles William Boakes, a taxi-driver, was arrested this morning charged with the murder of Ellen Gwendoline bcarn on 15th 'June. BOAKES REMANDED CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. In Court later Boakes was charged with the murder of Gwendoline Scarlt, and that on 19th May, 1927, he did unlawfully supplv a noxious thing, to wit, ergot, 'to the' girl, knowing the same was intended to be unlawfully used. Boakes's age was given as 37. He was born in New Zealand. He was remanded to 4th August on the application of the Crown Prosecutor. ACCUSED A MARRIED MAN Boakes is married, with two children, and has been employed by a city firm for some time. It is understood he at one stage worked for Walter Scarff, father of the dead girl. He was interviewed at length by detectives a day or two after the discovery of the body.
