ECONOMIC CONFERENCE
LANGUAGE OF CONVENTIONS (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian A N.Z. Cable Association) GENEVA, 9th June. The German Government, has been endeavouring to upset the article in the Peace Treaty which provides for only English and French texts of conventions. The Germans proposed that the Labour Office should prepare authoritative translations iri any required language. There has been much opposition to the proposal, as apart from introducing a new language there is the obvious danger of reconciling texts in various languages with the English and French texts, with a risk of mal-interpretation and consequently varying methods of carrying into effect tho provisions of* the conventions.
When a vote was taken there were 58 in favour of the German proposal and 42 against it. The Australian workers’ delegate voted in favour of the German proposal.
