Mr W. T. Bond, one of Nelson’s oldest and most respected citizens, attained his 86th year to-day. All will join in wishing the veteran “many happy returns.” Despite his advancing years, Mr Bond is constantly to be. seen about the city, and always has a kindly smile and an ever-ready • joke for any friends he chances to meet.

An interesting link with the early days of the historic old goldmining town of Charleston has been severed by the death at Westport of Mrs H. Kitson, widow of the late Mr, Patrick Kitson, who for many years edited ai d managed the Charleston “Herald.” The late Mrs Kitson was a native of County Kerry, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand in 1877, when but eighteen years of age. In 1879 she married, her late husband at Ross and removed to Charleston. After her husband’s death, .Mrs Kitson. assisted by her two sons, carried on the “Herald” for some years. After the death of tlie two sons, Mrs Kitson, with the help of two daughters, still struggled on with the publication of the paper, hut Charleston dwindled in size and the paper had to cease publication. Mrs Kitson was the mother of seven children, all of whom predeceased her, the lasi daughter, Mrs Eecleton, dying some two years ago, leaving one child.

Private .advice was received from Auckland to-day that Mrs A. Douglas, wife of Mr A. "Douglas, formerly headmaster of the Boys’ Central School, underwent. a serious operation in the Mater M isericordiao Hospital.

Mr W. Ritchie, wiio has been on the staff of the -Takaka Post Office for the. past thirteen months, has received a transfer to Mart in borough, and left this morning to take up his new duties.
