RUGBY FOOTBALL

HAWKES BAY CHALLENGES

WAIRARAPA

ACTION CRITICISED

(United Press Association)

AUCKLAND, This Day,

The reason why Lance Johnston, a member of the 1925 All Blacks, was not playing for College Rifles last Saturday is that he had already left for Masterton and will make the sixth New Zealand representative appearing in the Wairarapa team to defend the- Shield against Hawkes Bay on 9th July. North Island opinion appears generally antagonistic to a Bay challenge so soon after losing the Shield, the projected action comparing unfavourably with Auckland’s. After losing the Shield in 1913 ho challenge was lodged against Taranaki until on a subsequent southern tour, on which Auckland boat tire new holders by II to 8 at New Plymouth.
