AUCKLAND TRAMWAYS
PREFERENCE TO IAIAtIGRANTS DENIED
(By Telegraph.—Special to "The Mail.”)
AUCKLAND, 7th May
A denial that preference was given to immigrants among those who applied for positions at the office of (lie Tramways Department was made by the general manager, Air A. E. Ford. It was stated at a meeting of the New Zealand Natives Association on Thursday that a notieo announcing that there were no vacancies had been exhibited outside the department's office in Custom street West for the past three years, but that the majority of Ihe men employed hv the I ram ways in that period were immigrants. Air Ford staled that (lie notice referred to had not been shown continuously. When vacancies occurred it was removed and had only been replaced when no positions wore available. The stnl mienl that, immigrants had received preference was entirely erroneous. while the suggestion (hat only “crack” Soccer players received appointments was without foundation. Married men with families were certainly favoured, but whether the man played football or not was not a fact which affected his obtaining a position.
