Saturday's Rugby fixtures wore plnvod under perfect weather conditions, there, being n large attendance at the Park In witness the senior gmiv's. 'I he game between Rivals and Nelson was characterised by rough play, the referee having to million players on several nr casinos, and a Rival man was ordered olf the field. The Old Roys’-Pirate fixture was a fine open game, a, feature being the heavy scoring by both teams. In the junior game Old Roys ran through the Y.M.C.A., piling up 68 points to nil.
RIVALS V. NELSON
The Rivals v. Nelson game at I reeled a large crowd of spectators who witnessed a game (hat was hard and keen from start to finish. Unfortunately right from the outset, it was seen that, several players of each team were more intent mi piaying the man instead of the ball, l rnm the start the usually sound Nelson back division seemed not to he able to he a filing rigid and only For the splendid game played bv their full back, McKinley, Rivals score would have been considerably larger. Kenning, and Kinzclt were the pick of the Nelson pack, whilst, Mellwraiili and .McKinley shone out in the hack division. Rival forwards all played a sulendid game and Mellwraith in the backs played his best game for a season or two, the “potted” goal registered by him being a, very quick bit of work. Nelson commenced to attack but sound defensive work by Hurley and Wallace forced them back. Nelson were penalised for offside play and Hurley gained a lot of ground with (lie. kick. "Shortly after Wallace was nearly over for Rivals, White saving. McKinley at this stage was frequently saving Nelson. Reed initialed a rush for Nelson and assisted by Garvin gained a lot of ground. Nelson again attacked and from Mahoney the ball travelled to Garvin, Mcihviaitii, Reed, and finally to While, who went over for a. good try, Reed failing with a. fairly difficult kick.—Nelson 3; Rivals
The first spell ended shortly afterwards with the score unchanged. 'flic second spell saw play of an even rougher nature and the referee had to administer advice to both teams. Rivals set up a strong attack and Shaw went ever at the corner for an unconverted try. Rival 3; Nelson 3. Nelson forwards now took a hand in Hie game and compelled Rivals to force. Give and take play followed and at this stage the referee ordered Uonigatti (Rival) off the field. Rivals now playing a. man short set up a strong attack‘arid Mellwraith made a clear break away, but when about to he tackled by 3teed who came up fast, attempted a pot but missed. Following up fast he again seemed and went over for a well earned try. No goal. Rivals 6; Nets an 3. Nelson faded away completely, their backs going to pieces and Rival forwards appeared to have all “that Kruscheu feeling” as they came at it again and' agin, but Reed and McKinley were sound in defensive work. A sireng Rival, rush started and Nelson were driven back to their twenty-five. McTlwrailh again securing puceesr/uliy potted a goal from seven yards nut- -a quick bit of work. Rivals 10 ; Ne lson 3. Strenuous work bv both packs followed, but the score remained unaltered when time was called. Rivals 10; Nelson 3.
Mr Kemnilz successfully coni rolled a very difficult'game.
OLD BOYS V. PIRATES
In direct contrast to the game c: No. 1 ground tin's game was played in the most friendly spirit and consequently spectators j were, treated to play of a bright nature from start to finish. The Pirate, pack one. and all played a good game, their work m the loose being of particular merit. Bowers as usual was their “king pin” back. The Old Hoys forwards worked hard, Cox, Ward, and Barrett catrriing the eye, while Patterson and Snodgrass excelled in the back division. ,
At half time the Old Bovs team led by 20 to 12, tries being scored for Old Boys by Patterson, Leahy, 0. Snodgrass, and F. Snodgrass, all four mii-ig converted by the latter; whilst Pirate's points were put up by four penalty kicks.
If. Snodgrass soon put his side fm(her ahead as Ihe result of a. great pot from the half wav line, and the same player before time was called added a couple of good tries to his tally, making his Inin I for the. game 21 out, of 30 points stored.
Pirfat.es gained another 6 points as the result of two unconverted tries and a game remarkable for points gained from kicking terminated. Old Bovs gained 12 points and Pirates 15 free' f'oal kicking alone, whilst Old Boys crossed Pirates line in six occasions and Pirates gained two trios.
