PARENTS’ AFTERNOON

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

On Friday afternoon last, a Parents Afternoon was held at l’iwaka School. AbdUt fifty parents and visitors were present. Prior to the main business of the afternoon being undertaken, the guests had time to admire the beauty of Hie grounds, and the fine school with its valuable set of pictures. As one peris the more beautiful, the school or the son remarked, “It is hard to say which is the more beautiful, the school or the grounds.” The shrubbery of native plants was specially admired, and the headmaster, Mr Street, was warmly congratulated upon this, as it was s»le!y clue to his personal work and care that the plantation was established. A varied programme of items was rendered, including some gems on the school grafonola. Mr Street addressed the gathering and spoke of the importance of a good environment for the children. He stressed the point that envronment was more important than birth in roe production of character, and that it was necessary to provide good music and good surroundings both at home and at school, if the children were to grow up into first class a love for the beautiful things of life, citizens, strong in character, and with Music was a great aid in character building, and now that the school possessed a splendid grafonola and a set of records of a high standard, the children should increase in their appreciation of the best things of life, as opposed to the jazz, the shallow and the merely noisy. A collection in. aid of the school funds was taken up and realized £2/3/9. Afternoon tea was then dispensed with the aid of Miss Fowler and the senior girls, who provided the eatables. A few parents lingered to hear further gems on the grafonola. It is proposed to hold a. parents’ afternoon at the close of each term, as the headmaster, after an experience of fifteen year* of such gatherings, is strongly convinced that in no other way can teachers, parents and scholars be brought- info such happy relations.
