SUTER ART SOCIETY
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The annual general meeting of the Sliter Art Society was held at the. Suter Art Gallery on ’Friday afternoon, when Mr F. G. Gibbs, vice-president, took the chair.
A NATIONAL LOSS
The annual report for 1926 made reference to the death of Mrs Leo Manoy (Mina Arndt) who was a vice-president of the Society and also of the National Art Association of New Zealand and whoso work had for many years been a prominent feature at the Society’s exhibitions. It stated that the exhibitions held during the year had not been as profitable as usual, probably owing to the financial depression and to the fact that so many had visited (.lie gallery at the Dunedin Exhibition. ' The statement of accounts showed that members’ subscriptions. had amounted to £2O and the gross proceeds of exhibitions to £22. On the other hand the expenditure on exhibitions-had been £l3, while £l6 had been spent on a new set of screens and £5 had been handed to the Suter. Art Gallery Trustees.
MAINTAINING THE SOCIETY
A discussion arose as to the disposal of the sum of £2OO which at the instigation of the late Miss Nina Jones hud been accumulated for the purpose of providing a capital investment, the interest on which should he earmarked for the maintenance of the Gallery. Miss Jones had hoped that £SOO might be accumulated before it was handed over to the Trustees of the Gallery, But it was suggested that the sum' of £2OO now available should he handed over at once. It was finally decided to postpone a decision until the next general meeting to he held at an early date.
NEW ZEALAND ARTISTS
Mr Hugh Scott pointed out that there were a number of prominent New Zealand artists whose work was entirely unrepresented in the Gallery. ;He thought it would be a pity if the money derived from the Besley bequest (£SO a year) were always expended upon English works of art to the exclusion of Dominion paintings, and he therefore moved: “That it be a recommendation to the Gallery Trustees that pictures of prominent New Zealand artists, such as Nugent Welch, Nicholls, Thompson, Walsh, Macdonald, McKenzie, M. King, Manoy, Muntz, etc., be purchased for the Gallery as funds permit.” Seconded by Dr. ‘Washbourn and carried.
