AUCKLAND BOWLING TOURNAMENT

FINE PLAY BY P. J. SCANTLE

BURY

(By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. P. J. Scantlebury's feat in reaching the final of the Auckland centre's bowling tournament is a topic in, northern bowling circles, the performance of this young skip (Auckland) bringing him well into the limelight. On" several occasions his outlook was very black, but he came to light in fine style and redeemed the situation. In his game with Kilgour (Carlton) he changed a very difficult head from 5 down to 2 up when there were only a few heads to go. He was 3 up with one head to go when Kilgour, by brilliant shots, drew level, but lost in the play off. His last "head with Foskett in the fifth round was highly exciting. Wanting four to tie Scantlebury scored them, and beat Truscott (Carlton) by hvo on an extra head, thereby qualifying for the semi-finals, in which .he drew a bye, Truscott vanquishing Whittle (Grey Lynn) by 22 to 20. In the final Truscott gave his usual dashing display and Scantlebury was dearly up against, it all the afternoon, and although he made several good recoveries, was unable to cope with the combined efforts of Truscott and his companions, who won by 23 to 14. The Carlton bowling team comprising Clarkson, Coutts, Ball and Truscott, put up a great record in winning the Auckland centre's Christmas tournament twice in succession and three times at intervals. A tribute to the winners was paid by Scantlebui-y, skin of the run-ners-up, when he said that in future events the Carlton team should be handicapped to the extent of conceding other competitors four lives instead of two, and that the team's No. 2 (Coutts) should be made to play left-handed. Scantlebury is a well-known barrister r.nd solicitor. He is an old Reeftonian who had a brilliant scholastic career, being educated at Nelson College (paining (lie Board scholarship at Reefton) and Victoria College, Wellington.
