The Pacific Cable Board report to 31st March shows the total traffic receipts to be £453,596. a decrease compared with, the previous year of £81,416, which is attributed partly to tin* loss of American business and partly to the reduced rates. The excess of receipts ovei expenditure was £149,770 of which £70,144 is allocated to the reserve renewal fund, which consequently stood at £2.313,971. About 11.900.000' words of international paying traffic were handled, which is about the same as the previous year. The full rate traffic decreased by 570.0G0 words, but deferred messages, daily letter telegrams, and week-end telegrams, and also government business increased.
NEW CABLE TO BE LAID

Air E. \Y. Smith, engineer of t iie Telegraph Const met ion and Maintenance Company, London, arrived here on route to Bamfield, Ynncouvor Island, the Pacific cable terminus. He will carry out tests of the new 3(100 mile cable to Fanning Island. The new cable weighing 7200 tons, is aboard the ship Dominia which is due on October loth. Mr Smith expects cable laying to start within three weeks and to be finished in lo days. Hi l says cable communication between Canada and Australia is expected to be speeded up 300 per cent.
