Alderman Morell has been elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne, states a press cablegram.

Mr J. Weir, third engineer of the Anchor Coy’s steamer Arahura, died on Saturday night from pneumonia. Deceased, who bad been laid up only since Wednesday last, had been in the employ of the Anchor Coy. for many years. To ihe widow and family of seven sc,os the greatest sympathy' will lie extended. When Miss Reeves announced her intention to resign the position of chief librarian at- the Nelson Institute, a large number of the members expressed their desire to show in some tangible form their appreciation of her long and faithful services. On Friday afternoon they met Miss Reeves at the Institute and r.n behalf of tile subscribers presented her with a cheque, fri making the presentation, the president, Mr F. (.!. Gibbs, reviewed the chief events in the history of the Institute during the 3-1 years that, had elapsed since Miss Reeves was first appointed, and warmly eulogised Tier valuable services, especially at certain critical times as when* the former building was destroyed by fire in .1906. Mr Knapp and Mr Move’s also testified to the unfailing courtesy Miss Reeves had always shown and the remarkably able manner in Which she bad carried out- her duties as librarian. In replying.
