The impression appears to have prevailed in some quarters that as a resell (i the slump in the franc, prices of French soft goods and oilier merchandise from Franco were likely to become much lower. According, however, to statements made by Auckland business houses, this is not likely to be the case. French exporters, it is stated, are shrewd enough to avoid loss in this respect. Many of them quote their prices in sterling, and when they have quoted francs, they have safeguarded themselves by stipulating tlmt the rate of exchange shall he not lower Ilian at the date of shipment. Tim only noticeable effect of the piesent situation, it. was added, was that some French houses, being uncertain about the situation, have ceased accepting orders.
