The chairman said that provided iho Department subsidised the scheme i-s asked for, a sum of about £73 would have to be raised in the Motueka district, in other words, about 2/6 per head of the average attendance of each school concerned. A suggestion put forward by Air Banner to> raise funds for the Motueka quota (about £3O) was to hold a children's fancy dress ball. Other means were advanced and favourably considered. With reference to the owtside schools it was decided on the motion of Messrs Morris and Parker that the secretary of each committee be forwarded a promise note setting out the quota to he raised and asking that same be signI cd and returned within one month.

BRASS BAND ANNPAL I\IEETIiNG The annua), meeting of the Motueka Brass Band was hfcd in the Horticultural Hall ion Wednesday evening. The Mayor (Major I). W. Talbot; occupied the chair. An apology for absence was received from Mr Buckcridgo. In the course of his remarks, the Mayor said he had always been a keen supporter of the Band which, he considered, was a decided asset to the borough. He referred to the advancement that had been made by the Band; it was a treat to listen to the music they provided ; citizens ought to show their appreciation by attending the meeting in larger numbers. The balance sheet presented showed a credit balance of £3O 8s lid and was adopted on the motion of Messrs Benseinann and Bate. The chairman remarked that the balance sheet was, most satisfactory, considering Che few engagements the Band had had during the year. He complimented the members on the successful manner in which they had conducted their affairs. The annual report was read and adopted on the motion of Messrs McFarlane and Wickens. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: — Patron, Mr R. P. Hudson, M.P.J president, The Mayor (Major D. W.' Talbot).—Mr 11. Smith (bandmaster) said that the Mayor had .consistently supported the Baud and he only wished that a few more citizens would take as much interest in its doings.—Vice presidents, Messrs Thos. McMahon, H. buckcridge, J. A. Wallace, E. Trevena, S. B. Canavan, C. B. Morris, H. Manoy, and Drs. Bathgate and Green. Resolved (Messrs Goodyer and Knapp) that the offices of secretary and treasurer be separate-Carried. Secretary, Mr E. Bensemann; treasurer, Mr A. E. Fry. ' A letter was received from Mr H. H. Smith forwarding his resignation as bandmaster. 'Mr Blensemanii spoke in eulogistic terms of the services rendered by Mr Smith and said that the letter came as a shock to all the bandsmen. The Mayor made reference to the. uphill fight experienced by the Band and'its ultimate success, which was largely due to the efforts of Mr Smith and his ability as a conductor. Along with others he much regretted Mr Smith's decision to resign. t Resolved (Messrs Knapp and Fry) that Mr Smith's resignation be accepted with regret. Mr Smith assured the meeting that he intended to remain as a bandsman and to do his bit at the stand. Mr J. Goodyer was appointed bandmaster, and Mr E. Bensemann deputy bandmaster; band sergeant, Mr Off R. Talbot; custodians, Messrs P. V. Knapp, and A. Goodman; committee, Messrs G. Thorn, P. V. Knapp, C. R. Talbot, H. Delany, and A. TC. Fry; auditor, Mr S. B. Canavan; drum-ma-jor—. Since this is a new innovation for the Motueka band it was decided to leave the selection to the committee. Mr Bensemann suggested that the Band consider means and ways of raising funds for purchase of silver instruments.

Mr Smith was in favour of purchasing brass instruments especially in view of the fact that the hand had already eight first class brass instruments. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Bouridy that the committee, consider the matter of organising a. gala day as a means of raising funds for the purchase of-instruments . Mr Wallace spoke of the fine spirit of good fellowship that existed among the. bandsmen. The band was ft municipal matter and he was surprised at the total absence- of councillors, with tho exception of Mr Fry. In his opinionthe Mayor was the' only member of the council who took a lively interest in the band. He thought it bad taste on the part of councillors not to be present on such an occasion. Mr Smith added that Mr Wallace's remarks were called for. On the motion of Messrs Fry and Talbot it was agreed that a citizen's committee be set up to act in conjunction with the Band committee . jhe following citizens' committee was elected: The Mayor and Messrs Bounrly.
