WELLINGTON, June 9. The following news items were broadcasted from the New York Times building' by. the Australian Press ’Association and picked up by Air Shrimpton, junr. Berlin, 8th —A veritable bombshell was thrown into the referendum campaign to-night by the publication of a private letter by President Hindenburg, setting forth his views on the ex-pvo-priation of German former ruling families’ properties, which is the goal of Socialists and Communists in the coming popular vote on June 20th. He says the proposed legislation endangers all property. New York Bth. —The New York Telephone Company will raise their rates more than three dollars per year per telephone, beginning shortly. They have just passed increases of nearly nine million dollars. Mayor Walker’s plan to sound the curfew for the night clubs of New. York went, into effect at two o’clock this morning, when every cabaret known,to the police as an all night resort was ordered to he empty of patrons by that hour. The citizens’ committee appointed toi censor Broadway shows has closed one, the “Bunk of 1926,” and modified several. Theatrical managers threaten litigation against the city. New York exchange on London is 4.76*. Washington Bth. —Large tax receipts of this year have averted a Government loan. The Secretary of the Treasury, Air Alellon, announced that (jebts to the extent of 850 million dollars are to he liquidated. T,he time-honoured uniform of the United States marines is to be changed this summer. It will be a dark shade of khaki with v a grayish tinge instead of the light yellow now worn. The tax upon mining properties has been declared legal. This tax will bring the governing authorities of various joining states millions of dollars annually. Geneva Bth.—Arms experts have taken up the question of aeroplanes in countries subscribing to the conference. It is expected Fiance will have to change her air policy drastically to comply. ... Chicago Bth.-—One flier was killed and three others are missing us the result of the opening of the new MinneapolisChicago air mail line yesterday. This tragedy, however, it is stated in Government circles, will not delay the mail service.
