DAIRY FARMING
WINTER OUTLOOK IN NELSON"
NOT TOO BRIGHT With winter almost upon us the outli.'.k for the dairy farmers is anything hut bright. A wet cold spring, a dry rummer, and an early winter make ail unpleasant combination, but at present it seems that this is what the farmer lias to face.
The rain last week was splendid while it lasted, ami for the root crops and cultivated ground generally it was quite xuiiicieut ; nut the hard-baked pastures needed double the rainfall or more. To make matters worse the eold southerly winds of the next few days dried up the surface and theektd the growth so that now the fields seem almost as hard and dry as they were before the rain.
With a light hay crop many dairy farmers will find it difficult to winter their stock unless the coming month pi ores to be warm and showery, and present indications point to anything but this.
