At Eastbourne a, tennis match is being played between Britain and the American Wimbledon contingent on Davis Cup lines, four games of singles and one of doubles. Thv first day’s play resulted, Casey (America)) beat Wheatley, 6 —o, 6 —l, 6—3. Gilbert (Britain) beat Hennessev, 6—2, 6—3, 7—5. LONDON CHAMPIONSHIPS LONDON, June 16. In the Lohulon tennis championships, first round, Cartwright beat Melody, 6 —2 6—2. Mrs Colston beat Mrs Melodv 6—2 6—3. LONDON, June 16. Anderson again practised at Wimbledon. Playing singles against Barclay and Lycett, he beat the former comfortably by 6—o, 6 —2, 6—3, and was leading Lyctt 6—o, 3—l, when the latter. feeling indisposed, had to return to the pavilion. Anderson -says he is feeling improved in health and was pleased with -his form to-day. THE SPORTING SPIRIT LONDON, June 16. An incident at the tennis meeting, when Misses Boyd and Aklmrst tossed a coin, greatly amused Australians in London, because of its typical Australian sporting spirit. Miss Akfrarst said it was ‘‘silly to think that we had come all the way from Australia to play each other. We are such good friends, T don't like the idea of one putting the other out.” So they tossed and then I lie loser announced a walk over. Miss Akehurst was disappointed at not. meeting Mrs Lycett, who withdrew, but had a doughty opponent in Mrs Gouch, who is.a player of note in India. LONDON, Juno 17 Mrs Lycett beat Miss Akhurst 7—5, I—6, 6—i. Harper beat Fry 6—3, 6—2.
