BAD WEATHER IN NORTH ISLAND

During the past few days very tempestuous weather lino been experienced in the Straits and on the West Coast of the North Island, seriously inconveniencing shipping. Tho Arahura, which left Nelson for Picton and Wellington on Saturday morning struck the full force of the gale in the Straits. It is understood the vessel got as far as Wellington Heads when a wireless message was received stating that it would be unsafe to enter, as heavy seas were breaking a mile inwards. The Arahura thereupon returned to Picton, leaving again at 12 o’clock last night. The ivaitoa, which, left Nelson on Saturday night, got as far as Cape Terawhiti, but turned back to Picton, w'here she loft at 6 o’clock this morning. The Titoki has been' barbound at Wanganui, but was expected to get away thi s afternoon. Further north the Opua has been barbound at Onehunga since Thursday last, but hopes to leave for Nelson this afternoon. NIKAU KEEPS TO TIMETABLE The Anchor Line Nikau fully maintained her reputation as a splendid little seaboat. and left Wellington as usual on Saturday night, arriving here yesterday morning. The master reported very heavy seas at the Heads. NOT FELT IN NELSON As frequently happens when stormy weather is being experienced in the Straits, Nelson did not feel its effects. The week-end has been calm and fine, although on Saturday forenoon' the weather was very bleak, but the sun cams out in tile afternoon. There is still a good deal of snow on the ranges, some of the lower hills also being covered. Today is fine ar\d sunny.

AIARAROA HAS ROUGH TRIP

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day The ferry steamer Alararoa which left Wellington at 7.55 p.m. on Saturday only arrived at Lyttelton at 6.30 this morning—one of- the longest trips on record. Delay was caused by heavy seas and gale. Sometimes the vessel made but two knots an hour, the weather being dirty and squally. The captain sijid it- was the worst trip he had experienced on the -ferry. Terrible seas were encountered.
