The annual meeting of the Nelson Chess Club was held at the Club rooms, under the presidency of Mr IT Curadus, there being a large attendance of members. T’lie retiring I’residtmt was warmly thanked for his untiring energy ever cised on behalf of the Club, especially at 11 10 time of the New Zealand Chess Congress last Christmas, a great deal of its suet-ess being due to bis eflorts. lho Sceretarv was also tlianked for bis work (hiring the past rather busy year. Many matters affecting the luturo policy of the Club were discussed, and it- was decided this season to only hold ladder competitions and the usual competition for the. possession of the silver Knight.
During the progress of the New Zealand Chess Championship Tourney held in the Mnrsdo.n Church II nll last Christmas, large numbers of Die public attended the sessions, and il is felt to be a pitv that anyone interested in the game should not follow it up and join the cluli. To all those who are able to do so a cordial invitation is extended to attend the opening evening and sides match, which will lie held in Benyon s Marble Bar on ’ Wednesday evening next. April 29tli. at 7.30. In order to make this season both interesting and instructive. Mr E. H. Severne has kindly consented to give a lecturetle on the various openings on the last Wednesday in each month. All games played on these evenings will he confined to the opening under discussion. The Club meets at 7.30 each Wednesday evening in Benyon’s Marble Bar, Trafalgar Street, and the Secretary (2 Waimoa Road) w’ll he pleased to hear from any player, beginner or otherwise, who would be willing to- join the Club.
