Herriot told rt Paris correspondent that the appointment of General Nollet as Minister of War was a plain warning to those beyond the Rhine Who dreamed of revenge, and that military control must be continued rigorously and effectively. Germany, ho declared, was engaged in carrying out the same operation as she did after the Peace of Tilsit in 1806, and Waft giving tho whole of lief young men military instructions on n large scale by all "sorts of means, especially by so-called gymnastic associations. Hfs Government would be disposed to follow a conciliatory policy towards Germany, .but everything del pended on Germany, who must prevent Nationalists carrying on their propaganda. The present system must be altered. If, his Government could not obtain satisfaction Tt would deal lit • the first possible way with German reactionaries. This was the only way in which to safeguard the rights not only of France but of the democracy of the wlrole world. M. Herriot emphasised that General Nollet knew better than anyone else the present military position in Germany.
GENERAL NOLLETT AS WAR MINISTER ANGER IN GERMANV BERLIN, Juno 16. The appointment of General Nollett as French Minister of War was received with consternation and anger by the newspaper, particularly the Nationalist papers, which indulge in violent language, terming it a “blow in the face” to Germany, and evidence that France intends to continue the old policy.
