The Mail’s Christchurch correspondent wires that Superintendent B. Sheehan inspected the members of the Christchurch Police force yesterday for the last time. The announcement was made some time ago that Superintendent Sheehan was about to retire. He will finish bis duties after a long and successful career in the force on September 13tb. Mr E. S. S. Lucas, son of Dr. and Mrs Lucas-, is leaving to-night to catch the Port Sydney for London, \Yhere lie will complete his medical studies at St. Thomas’s Hospital.
Mr F. Brown, foreman of the Eltham Argus, and formerly of The Mail staff, is paying a visit to Nelson after an absence of 17 years. In his more youthful days Mr Brown was a well-known hockey and cricket player.
Mr Salvatore Cimino arrived from Wellington this morning under engagement as musical director to Mr E. Norden of the Paramount Theatre. Mr Cimino was for many years conductor foy Dix Gaiety Company’s, Theatre Royal, Wellington, Fullers, His Majesty’s Theatre and J. C. Williamson’s Companys. His last engagement was Queens Theatre, Wellington. Mr Cimino plays many instruments, being some years ago champion cornet player of New Zealand and competition coach. Many of his compositions are in print. The members of the Ruby Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association are losing cue of their number, as Ytr J. S. Vickers is leaving the district. At a farewell send-off, held at the residence of Mr J- Addison, president of the Association, the opportunity was taken to present the departing guest vith a souvenir of tho occasion, the present talcing the form of a case of pipes which was presented by the president on behalf of the members of ti e Association On the motion of Mr A. Forsyth, the health of the guest was toasted with musical honours, regret being expressed at Mr Vickers’ and family’s departure. The rest of tho evening was filled in with song and story and a very pleasant entertainment ended, with tho singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” At. an afternoon given by the ladies of the district at Mrs Forsyth’s residence on Thursday, occasion was taken to make a presentation to Mrs Vickers.
