TRAFALGAR PARK

COST OF IMPROVEMENT’S

A PRACTICAL SUGGESTION

When the deputation from the Ratepayers’ Association waited on too Council a couple of weeks ago the City Engineer, in reply to a question, said it would cost about £2OOO to put. Trafalgar Park in reasonable order for fooball and cricket.

Cr. Moffatt inquired at last night's meeting of the Council how the Engineer arrived at the estimate. He had been continually “buttonholed” by ratepayers on the matter, who appeared to be sceptical that such a sum would be required. The Engineer replied that nothing but lop-dressing would do the ground any good. It was proposed to cart the soil for this purpose from Weka-street. Some 4000 yards would bo needed, and it would cost 10/- a yard to put it there. He considered this a low estimate to do the job properly. Cr. Moffatt said he was satisfied with the answer. He also urged that something should be done to drain the surface water.

Cr. Edwards suggested that the sports bodies should form working bees and do the manual labour in obtaining the soil, and the Council would do the carting. The sporting public were most concerned, and it would be a good way of showing their practical sympathy with the improvements suggested. The matter was not further discussed.
