MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE
■ —— — MAYOR'S RETURN The Mayor (Air W. Loekj returned from Dunedin and Christchurch yesterday. Whilst in Dunedin he attended the capping ceremony of the Otago University at the invitation of the Chancellor and Senate. At Christchurch he represented the city at the 16th Municipal Conference, which was held for the first time outside the city of Wellington. There were about eighty delegates from various parts of the Dominion. Owing to the Mayor of Wellington (who is President of the Association) being detained by Parliamentary duties, the Mayor of Christchurch (Air J. A. Fleshcr, " a vice-president) was voted to the chair, and the business was transacted in a most expeditious manner, as in two days and an evening, sitting over 140 remits on a very wide range of subjects concerning municipal affairs and administration were dealt with; many being of considerable importance. The whole of the arrangements in connection with the Conference were arranged by the Christchurch" City Council, and were most satisfactory, the comfort and convenience of the delegates being well provided for. In addition to this members of the conference were entertained at lunch in the Jcllicoe Hall, and were also presented with free passes by the Tramway Department of the City Council, and invited to an entertainment and conversazione by the Citizens’ League, which owing to" pressure of time, delegates were unable to accept. Motor cars were available to convey delegates to places of interest in various parts of the city. Twenty cars were required for those able to take this drive, which occupied about 2' 2 hours’ continuous travelling, ending with a visit to the fine municipal tepid baths. The Mayor of Wellington wa.s re-elect-ed President of the Association, and the Mayors of Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin,. Nelson and Wanganui vice-presi-dents and ex officio members of the executive. The Mayor will report to the City Council at its next meeting on some of the more important matters considered and dealt with hv the Conference.
