ST. JOHN'S METHODIST CHURCH
FOREIGN MISSIONS A mission tea a)fd meeting organised by the Ladies' Mission Auxiliary of St. John's Church was held in the School hall last evening,"the object being to assist the causes of mission work in the Solomon Islands, the, new field talceri" over by the New Zealand Methodist Church. A goodly number were present at the, tea. A public meeting followed, at which the Rev. E. W. Hames presided. The Rev. J. Rogers was the principal speaker of the evening, and i' tlio course of a forcible address, saui that though in many quarters missions wer: by no means a popular thing, being looked upon as a waste of time and money: there was no doubt that missionary spirit justified itself. The contrast between the'conditions, that exist where the Gospel of Christ had not been taken were very" marked indeed,-as in India, Japan, China", Africa, and other parts of the w.or}tL ', . . Mr HameJ, in a. few concluding remarks, stated that mission work had been carried on at the Solomons for soma 20 years past, and a number of the Islands had already been evangelised. It was hoped that' in another ten or twelve years that "the Gospel would be taken 'to all the peoples in the group. Vocal and instrumental items • wererendered during' the evening by Mesdariies Gibson, Savage, Misses Doidge and Moves, Messrs J. Mayson and R. Branford.
