IMPORTANT PUBLIC MEETING

DRAINAGE AND WATER SUPPLY CONSIDERED ]Rs’J'RIC T'S EDUCATIONAL NEEDS SCHOOL BUIr.DJNG INADEQUATE A public meeiing was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday evening, .March 29th, to consider the important questions of drainage, water supply and the Murchison public school. There was a very good attendance, especially of the ladies. Mr A. G. Monahan, chairman of the County Council, called the meeting and presided; and in opening the meeting congratulated those present on attending tiip meeting in such large numbers, and briefly referred to the important, questions to he considered at that meeting; viz, drainage, water-supply, public school and other matters; and called upon Air Fraser, County Clerk, to give an outline (J what had been done. Air Fraser stated that Air Toogood, Civil Engineer, iiad been approached during one of bis visits and he thought a suitable water supply could be obtained from one or two sources over the township, but the cost of the scheme had not been gone into.

The chairman informed the meeting it was open for the meeting to discuss tiie matters. Air J. Bredbury commended the chairman for calling the meeting and expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present and said he would take, the liberty of moving the first resolution and then it would be open for the meeting to discuss the matter. He moved that this meeting, while regretting I lie number of sick cases in the district. is of the opinion that the present time is premature to undertake, a comprehensive drainage scheme for the township of Alureiiison and respectfully suggests and recommends the '• emity Council to seriously consider the prevailing conditions of the town and district generally, and to adopt and pass so eh bylaws 'for the whole of the Alurekisou county that- will be conducive t<y,the health and welfare of the whole community.

.Mrs Wilkinson seconded the, resolution, and after a short, discussion if was carried almost unanimously.

WATER SURREY Air J. Bredbury moved that this meeting urges upon the. County Council to ascertain the wishes of the ratepayers of the Hamden riding on the question of a water service for the riding mVrl that the questions submitted to the ratepayers shall ho - fa) Are- you in favour of a water scheme for the Hamden riding? .(hi Are you in favour of the County Council engaging a consulting engineer to report on the best water scheme, with an estimated cost of the same. Mr Haves seconded the resolution. Airs T. Bell moved an Yfmondmoiitthat only the question covered by the first, portion of the resolution be submitted to the ratepayers; viz., are you in favour of a water scheme for the Hamden riding? Air E. Kerr seconded the amendment. The following spoke on the qusetion : Airs AA ilkinson, Airs ,T. Bennett. Alcssrs AY. Ilodgkirisbn and G. Wvllie. AFrs AVilfcinson suggested that a proper poll of the ratepayers should ho taken, and spoke very vigorously in support of the same. Air Fraser explained that the views of the ratepayers would' be ascertained in a. more economical manner than by a poll; and this was favourably received bv the meeting. Airs J. Bennett pointed out that several advantages that would be obtained by a- water supply, and reminded the meeting that the premiums on fire insurances would be less if wo had a. good water supply. The chairman, in putting the amendment to the meeting, asked for a show of hands, and then submitted the. motion and declared the amendment lost and the motion carried.
