THE PLAY The finals are being played on the Nelson Club’s old greens to-day. The weather is perfect, and there is a largo attendance. Tho greens are playing well, and some keen and close contests were seen. In the first round W. Deo (Maitai) easily disposed of the Picton_ rink skipped by Nicol ,winning by lo to 5: and T. Haldane ' (Nelson) accounted for Pickering (Palmerston N.) by 9 to 6. . In tho second round chief interest centred in tlio match between Reid

(Victoria, Wellington), who went t hrough his section witlusrt a loss, ana the .Motueka rink skipped by Branch. The scores were close throughout, and some exciting heads were seen. Oil the Btli head Reid led Branch by one point—9 to 8. On the two following heads Reid got a single at each, and continued his victorious career by winning by 10—8. Loud applause greeted the winning head. Brown (United, Christchurch) and I Haldane (Nelson) had a keen struggle and it was anyone’s game right up to tho last head. When the skips went down for tho last time Brown was lying three .and the visitors required that number to make a drawn game. Haldane drove with his last bowl and displaced one of the counters, leaving Brown a chance to even tip the scores, but although he played a good shot lie was unsuccessful, the game ending in favour of Haldane by a bare point. Up to the-6th head T. Field (Nelson )was a winner all the way in the match against W. Dee (Maitai), leading by 8 to 1. Dee, however/ came strongly on the remaining heads, all of which he won, including a four on the Bth head, eventually winning by 9 to S. ? ;

G . Deo (Richmond) beat Iris clubmate, Cross, on the last head. On the 9h head Cross had a lead of 3 points, but on the final head Dee obtained a four and won, 9—B. Harp (Carterton) and Kershaw (Linwood) took the game to an extra bead before a decision was reached. The Carterton team won the first throe heads, leaving them four up, but the Southern men gradually drew up and made the game 9 all on tho 10th head, and won the extra, one. In the third round a sensational finish was seen in the match between Haldane and Harp (Carterton). On the seventh head Harp got a 4, giving him a lead of as many points. Haldane took the next head with 2. and the Carterton team took the next with 3. At the end of the ninth head Harp had a five-point lead, and the game, with only one head to go, looked an easy thing for him. But on tho last head Haldane’s No. 3 trailed the kitty and lay 3, and also drew another shot. Haldane with his first ball drew another, and with his last just missed drawing a sixth for the game. The bead thus ended 12 all, necessitating a continuation to find the winner. On the next head Carterton were lying the shot, but the'Nelson ski]i made it a dead head with his last bowl. On the next head tlie Northern team were lying two or three when the No. 3’s p’layed. Allen (Nelson) drove and shifted the kitty, which, however, kicked haek and gave Harp the shot. When tlie skips went down Carterton lay 3. Haldane drew the shot with his first, which Harp displaced and gave him 2. Haldane with liis last* bowl drew the shot, and the Carterton was unable to make any alteration with his last effort. Haldane won 13—12. Reid had no difficulty in beating Stonebanks; G.
