PORT NELSON REGATTA
SUCCESSFUL GATHERING Tlio annual regatta was held at Port Nelson yesterday in ideal weather, the various events being keenly contested. - Tlie launch Ella, a recent arrival from Auckland, was the flagship .The Silver Band played several selections during the afternoon lo tho enjoyment of all present. Sailing race: J. Cook’s .“Sappho” 1, Percy Day’s “Wave” 2. Six boats faced the starter,, indicating that, interest in tin's class of boat is reviving. In the Boys’ Pair-Oared race Johnstone and mate came first, with Gilbertson and mate second. A very, good race being won by half a length. "' In the first launch race Percy Thompson’s “Ella” came first, and Alex Jacobsen’s “Peerless” second. Gents Dinghy Race: Jack Harris I, J. Gabrielson 2. In the Pair-Oared Race, Jack Harris and mate were first, Jack Shanks and mate 2nd. Power boats (under 4 h.p.): J. Cochrane's “Maitai” 1, A. Tregidga’s “Pearl’s Baby,” 2. Ladies’ Pair-Oared Race: Mrs Wells and Miss Kawharu 1, Miss Gabrielson and Miss Hippolitc 2. In the Grand Launch Race the boats were handicapped according to their previous performancse. This was an interesting race, seven launches facing the starter. W. Reed’s “Pauline" 1; Percy Thompson’s “Ella” 2. In the ladies’ dinghy race, Miss Ray Hippolitc came Ist and Miss Kawharu 2nd.
The canoe sailing race was run tin a si iff sou’-west breeze and was won by 11. Littlejohn. One of the competitors met with a mishap shortly after starting and was unable to take part in the race.
The 'final event was a boys’ dinghy race and was won by Des. Collins, with Bert Gilbertson second
The Regatta Ball held in the Rowing Club’s shed in the evening was largely attended, music being supplied by Mr H. Williams’ orchestic.
