FIRES
OUTBREAK AT CARTERTON

CARTERTON, This Day
A fire broke out at 2.45 this morning in the Marquis Hotel. The outbreak originated in a storeroom on the ground floor, but the fact that all the doors and windows were shut confined the smoke, which partially smothered the ilames. The brigade was quickly on the scene and subdued the lire. The inmates were awakened by suffocating smoke, but all got out safely. Tim whole interior of the hotel was badly smoke-grimed, but the damage is covered by insurance.
DWELLING HOUSE DESTROYED
NARROW ESCAPE OF INMATES
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A five-roomed house belonging to Mr Charles Foster, of Stoke Street, Sumner, was totally destroyed at 2 a.m. Mr Foster and his sister and a visitor escaped through windows. The insurances are: Building £7OO in the Atlas office; furniture £2OO in the Victoria office.
