WELLINGTON SINGING COMPETITIONS
CONTRALTO SOLO
Miss Nellie Taylor, of Wellington, daughter of Mr Joseph Taylor, Nelson, who two years ago obtained the second prize in the singing competitions in Wellington Town Hall, has this year succeeded in carrying off the first prize for contralto solo. Miss Taylor sang ("Long Ago in Egypt’’ (own selection). | This year there \ve- r o altogether 875 1 vocal competition entries, as against 708 last year. The following is the judge’s comment on the contralto solo: Winner, very good start; does not keep the full value of notes; fine rendering; good quality of voice; production and enunciation fair.” The Dominion remarks: — the competitions are shaking down to real business, stage fright and the anxieties of the opening day having given way to earnestness and determination on the part of the competitors to give of their very best, and so enhance the individual and' collective quality of the performances. There was a nice variety about yesterday’s entertainment that shows the discrimination exercised by the executive in making the maximum appeal to lovers of music, singing and elocution.
