POWER HOUSE SITE
THE Harbour Board, at its meeting on AVednesday, did not appear to grasp tlie position regarding the power house site for the proposed electric works. The City Council is absolutely limited to a waterfront site, as this was expressly stated when the matter was being placed before the ratepayers. If such a site is not secured the poll, it seems to us, will be invalidated. The Haulashore Island site mentioned in the discussion appears to bo out of the question altogether. The smoke nuisance is one which is unfortunate wherever the works are placed, and it is easy to sympathise with residents concerned. But it is also easy to overestimate the disadvantages that will arise under modern methods. The'City Council and Harbour Board will require to give further consideration to tlie matter and select o. site that will give the minimum of inconvenience to any residents, together with the maximum oflieiency to the people as a whole. By the terms of the poll the site is limited to the waterfront. AA’e hope the local bodies will be fair, but whatever is done they will have to show some backbone. ,
