OUR CITY FATHERS AND ELECTRICITY

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —"Well done, City Fathers, well done." 1 would be the expression ol many citizens on reading your report of the Council's decision to formulate a municipal scheme of electric lighting to place before the voters, for sanction or rejection; of the necessary loan proposal. It now remains to he seen with what amount of unanimity our (Mayor and Councillors will place the I scheme, before the .'community and by a vigorous educative campaign inspire and enthuse the citizens to sanction this much needed and essential system of lighting, at the coming .poll. With the open-confession l or disclosure of Cr. Nightingale, that the Council was responsible for the inception and formation of the Nelson. Electric Syndicate ; and his own personal preference for private enterprise, coupled with that of the Mayor, who still appears to face both ways, with his support to u municipal scheme and the repeated declaration of %\; hole-hearted support, to an electric scheme under private enterprise- if the eleceors re-i fuse to sanction thei municipal scheme, citizens will anxiously watch developments in the Mayoral Jind Councillors' I campaign in support of the scheme the Council formulates and adopts. (Siren a square (leal, a good scheme and a clear, plain, and well-organised campaign, the issue should' not be. in doubt, hut its adoption he assured by an overwhelming majority of workers. Should this prove to be the, result, mav we not plead with the public-spi-rited men who are said to compose the syndicate to turn their efforts towards our.Harbour Hoard, with a well devised scheme of harbour nn- j proveraent and mudflat reclamation. Surely the Board sorely needs the supremo efforts of every publitvspinted citizen to arouse it from its present lethargic st-ite if our growing export trade Is to have a fair chance, then our double thanks would be due to them for pushing to a successful issue ,i municinal electric supply; and the expansion of our exporting facilities, with room'on reclaimed lands for new factories and industries. T am, etc., THE MA N ABO I>T YO WX.
