PATRIOTIC FUNDS
OVER FIVE MILLIONS SUB- , SCRIBED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day An interesting statement covering the operations of patriotic societies from the commencement of the war up to the present year was presented by th© Minister of Internal Affairs to a* conference of the War Relief Societies yesterday. The number of societies operating at the end of each financial year, 31-st March, was: 11*17, 507; 1918, 983; 1919 r 881; 1920, 415. Amount of. relief to soldiers and dependents paid to 31st March, 1920* was: Up tp 31st March, 1917, £113,726 ; for year ended 31st March, 1918, £109,746.; 81st March, 1919, £128,367 ; 31st March, 1920, £376,895, a total of £728,734. . . Collections by patriotic societies from all sources were: Up l to 31st March, 1917* £2,509,188; for the year ended 31st March, 1918, £1,297,033; 31st March, 1919, £1,060,299 ; 31 sb March, 1920, £581,471, a total of £5,447,991- The total of patriotic funds available in the Dominion at 31st March, 1920, was: In the hands of trustees of approved war funds, £l,603,481 ; relief fund, £661; Hospital Ship fund, £248; National War Funds Council, £37,494; Convalescent Homes Account, £1282; War Expenses Contribution Account. £1457; New Zealand Comforts Account £1475; sundry small accounts £B6; total, £1,546,164.
