STOP-WORK MEETING.

DARGAVILLE, May 26.
There was a commotion in shipping circled this morning when a report spread that the watersiders loading the Sydney steamer Ihumata .had; struck. Inquiries showed- that matters were not so serious. -A stop-work meeting was held for the purpose of taking a secret ballot arising out of the <recent conference' between senmen and shipowners concenung a further rise in wages. Another trouble was in connection with overtime to*' be 'worked in loading the steamer. fhe 'men were opposed to working later than 5 o’clock. Captain Mathicson took " exception to this attitude, mid a conference was arranged to discuss the situation. The matter was referred tp Mr C. Davidson, secretary Of the focal branch of the Watersiders' Union, Captain Mathieson, and the Mayor (Mr R. E. Homblow). These gentlemen went fully into the grievances of the parties. The Mayor addressed the men, and a further meeting of the union was held, when everything was settled satisfactorily and the men decided to overtime.,
