A Wellington resident arrived at Wellington from Nelson via Pic-on yesterday, covering the. distance by motor and launch in eleven hours. Leaving Welmgton on Saturday he .arrived in Nelson at 4.30 a.m. on Sunday. Un arrival, he received, a message ; that ho was urgently required m Wellington. By a ? high-powered mown'-car he left Nelson at 0.6U a.m., reaching picton abput 11 a.m. The services of a friend \yere requisitioned, and the latter agreed. to run him across Look Strait iy .Wellington in hus launch, which is described as a - concave convex V-bot-tomed ; craft, built for whale-hunting purposes*. fortunately the Strait was copipara'iyely calm, and part of the journey was covered at a speed of 28 knots, and the launch raced up Port Nicholson, past an astonished feriy. steamer at a speed of about 20 knots, tying up at the wharf at h.2U p.m. i The launch is fitted with an engine developing .1.56 horse-power.
