LOCO MEN’S DEMANDS
MINISTER OF RAILWAYS IN REPLY. (United 'Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Hon. W. H. Herries (Minister for Railways), in a letter to -the Loco, men, states that he has also to meet the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and Railway Officers’ Institute this month, and therefore he cannot give the loco, men any definite promise as to the extent their claims will be met till he oan discuss the "whole question affecting the Department. The loco men are only 10 per cent, of the service, and the claims of the other 90 per cent, cannot be prejudiced by assenting offhand to the locos’, demands. “Requests of all branches involve an increase of several hundred thousands annually, which means a permanent increase in railway rates and fares or in taxation. Very careful consideration, therefore, is required, .and ’-.the icosf must be calculated, so that no one section of railway servants shall be given priority of treatment. The Minister states that he is in full sympathy with the reasonable aspirations of railwaymen, and as soon as a fair and comprehensive scheme can be prepared he will be willing to bring it before the House, the scheme to become oprative from Ist April.
