SOLDIER TEACHERS.
SCHEME TO RETAIN: THEM IN" THE
BROFIEQSJiON.
The proposal recently made by Mr J.' 3. Tcnnunt, director of tho Teachers Training College, Wellington, says ■ the Dominion, for special treatment on their return from the war for young -menwhose training period as teachers,''has been interrupted by the call of their country was laid! before the 'Minister *>f Education by a deputation of educationists which waited; upon him yesterday. Mr iR. A."Wright, M.F., introduced'the deputation. Mr Tennant and other speakers urged that it would) be a_ benefit to the teaching profession to induce theso youjig men to re-enter it, on their return, and that in order to get them back ino the profession, it # would •be necessary to offer them a living wape instead of the apprentice boy of a pupil teacher. ' The suggestion was ithat the amount of 10 per year should' be.offer- > > -d that the men be given appointments higher than that of pupil teacher, and that they bo instructed in then- prpfeßsion by correspondence with the staff of the Training College until thoy were able to qualify themselves fully. Mr Tennant said that tho staff of the college would gladly work overtime to assist, these young men. ■ The Minister, xepymg, saidf that the proposal involved a differentiation between student teachers w,ho had gone on with their course in the ordm< wav without interruption, and students who had returned from tho war. Such an important innovation wouldi have to be roferrrcd to Cabinot, and he would have pleasure in submitting it to his colleagues, who, with himself, would give it Ml consideration.
