GAS DEPARTMENT

THE ENGINEER'S REPORT.

A folio from the Gas Engineer's report was inadvertently omitted from the article iii .Saturday's issue. The omitted portion is as follows: Unaccounted for gas : This matter has been brought before the 'Council by me regularly during tihe past four years, -but no serious attempt to reduce this item to a reasonable figure was made until April, itu-t, when the alteration to the gas ledger and accounts already referred to was made. ,So that the position may 'be more cleanly understood, I have shown in the tabulated form below the gas manufactured and gas lost in cubic feet, also the percentage loss of the total gas manufactured each year from 1836 to 1917, tihe year just completed. For the period from 1906 to 1917 I have also shown the loss in revenue to the 'Council year by year. Table 1.

[From th e a>bove it will he clearly seen that the energy and money expended during the year in reducing the leakage account has resulted in 'bringing th 6 Nelson city gas undertaking into line with other gas undertakings in the country, but there is still much to be done, and it is possible to further improve the position by careful attention to the many technical and practical details of the undertaking. To emphasise my point more clearly, I would direct your attention to the period from 1896 to 1911, when the eras department was under tJhe management of others than a gas engineer, and note the percentage loss.
