EFFECT OF THE PASSPORT SYOTEM. •Notwithstanding the war, the Hon. Dr. R. -M'Nab, Minister in charge of Tourist E«sorts, anticipates that the coming tourist season will' be as busy at last year's. He stated at Wellington yesterday, says .the Post, that although the passport svstem' had diminished the_ number of tourists from overseas, it hati had a ibeneficial effect in another direction, as New Zea'landers were content to see the beauty spots of their own country, instead! of going abroad., Speaking of the Mount Cook Hermitage, iDr. Mi'Naib said that fa spite of the fact that the tariff had! been- increased business there was brisk last season, and there was no reason why the same satisfactory state of affairs Should not apply this season. There was accommodation "for about 80 people, and 'he 'had little doubt that at Christmas time *bis would all be occupied. As indicating how (the Moirat Cook trip appeals to manyi people, 'he mentioned that some -visitors 'book -their accommodation 12 months in adrvance. When the tariff was ; increased the point arose as to wihethei' !&ie old or new tariff should apply 'to such people, and it was decided that they were entitled to have the benefit of the lower rates.
