PROBABLE DEVELOPMENTS
ENEMY STILL HOLD STRONGEST POSITIONS. (Renter's Telegrams.) LONDON, July 27. Correspondents at British headquarters point out that while the capture of Pozieres, completing the British attack at Foureaux Wood, Delville Wood, an I Guillemont, has marked time, the Germans .still hold the strongest positions here, and are assisted by many machine guns. Sir Douglas Haig is -determined tha f , there shall be no reckless exposure of men. The possession of Pozieres is the first step towards the British sweep down the eastern slopes of' the plateau into the low ground leading to Bapaume. It also threatens' Thiepvil, ■which is a. stronghold holding up the British advance in the Ancre Vallev.
The Anzacs throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning made steady progress practically through the village. On Tuesday afternoon they were able to junction with the Territorials, who had done excellent work on the Anzacs' left.
After hot fighting we captured a strong German position, in the cemetery/ Oar machine guns did great execution among large parties of the enemy 'which tried to escape northward from the top of the village across the open. The Germans still hold strong positions around the windmill.
