NELSON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The aixn'aai 'meetin'g of the Neb.ur Horticultural S'ocie-t.v ' was held at <ho Institute l'ast evening, Mi' B. JET. Moller ! (President} in the chair. Ihe annual report was read by the secretary ('Air \Y. H. Simpson). ft stated, inter alia : "In presenting their annual report, the committee congratulate members on the successful year that has to W recorded. Tiie membership of the s*>eieLy, notwithstanding; the distraction .result , ing from the: war and the many financial calls for various patriotic funds, has been, maintained, the roll number mnu-ini-ng at about- t-he same a,? for t-he previous year. The financial position, tc-o. is eminently pntisfac-t-ory, more e.-- . pecially in view of the tiroes through which we are passing. "During the year the society decided to purchase its own exhibition- stands. An order was given to Messrs .Robertson Bros., and the stands were duly delivered 1 . !T-he style of the new tables appears to have given general satisfaction' to exhibitor?, though there was some difference of opinion regarding the rn-cst suitable 'height. This, however, can be adjusted as' experience dictate?. "Four shows were held during the year. The Bulb Show was tire most successful yet heidi. There was a fine entry, and several new exhibitors were amongst the competitors. The popularity of i-ne Bulb Show is undoubted. and may be confidently expected to increase as growers add' to their collections and new enthusiasts enter the lists. The Rose Show was not as successful as might have been wished. Weather conditions were chiefly responsible for this, many of those who regularly exhibit having no blooms fvn for the purpose or) show cay, -while the quality of the bloom? that- were staged, was not up to chc-u-sual standard. Mismbers made a credit able display with - blooms for exhibition only-. .Entries for the Sweet Pea and j Carnation .Show were highly sa-tisfac ! tory, and the display of these iiowcrs. j both in- quality* and quantity, was the best yet seen. Competition in sweet peas "was particularly keen, and the prizes were distributed. Carnations were staged in large nuiribers. and in very fine quality. Interest has been aroused in the carnation, and there are indications' that this flower will become more and more popular. At the Autumn ■Show the chief feature was as usual l»«e ohrysanthemaun. Many o\ the blooms in -the open class were up to the highest local standard. The amateur, blooms however, were en the whole not- so good as usual, the season! having been a most try-in £ one and the ca>L.=Tpillar pest worse than it has ever been previously. Dahlias were .staged in -great variety arid numbers, the cactus predominating. limit was not- exhibited to the -same extent as at' some previous shows, but the vegetable section; was well supported. •'At- t-ltfe R-ose Show a fine display was made bv the City Council "with, exhibits gathered from 'the public reserves. This was the first occasion on which this had! been done, and it is hoped i civic authorities- will assist at luture I shows. Mr G. F. Dodds has made excellent displays of pot plants at the ani ous shows, fw exhibition onlv. # lhe:>e have invariably bsen greatly aamired bj visitors, and- 'Mr Dodds? deserves the thanks of the society for having, added, so much to the attractiveness of the exhibitions.
