The Nelson Defence Office -was advised to-dav that three Nelson men who returned'bv the Willochra were leaving Lyttelton for Nelson via Wellington today. All are cof cases, and shoulU. reach here on Thursday morning.

The secretory" of the Education Board was advised bv wire yesterday that the Granitv School had been closed owing to the" girls' outhouse having been destroyed bv a storm, which, also badly damaged the boys' outhouse, the school 'pctfch", and the shelter shed.

The department of Agriculture states that there is no foundation for the following paragraph contributed by the Wellington correspondent of a. Southern i'paper last week :—"lt is stated that the Department of Agriculture, in these days of economy, is about to appoint an. expert to instruct farmers'how to lay out their gardens —a 'home beautiful' official! This, too, while orchards are not being inspected as they should be, and the fruit instructional staff baSly wants strengthening.' The home beautiful campaign would be welcome in a few years -to'come, but at the present time it is a iscandalous proposition."

I. Two stirring appeals for recruits were made at an "open air meeting held at Wellington the other evening, says the Post. The speakers we're Mr H. 'ivory and Sergeant-Major Dent, and each received an attentive hearing. Mr Ivory referred to his own record in tho matter of military service, and said that at 21 years of age he was the possessor of a war medal. Sergt.-Major Dent, in a breezy, forceful address, urged his hearers to enlist immediately under the voluntary system when they had the chance, and thus become members of the Expeditionary Force t and not of the Expeditionary Force Reserve. He dealt with the duty of the individual to go to the war, and the duty of the pa'rents of young men to encourage them to go. "Don'fc run away with the idea that we have an easy job on," he said. "We haven't; we have got a big contract on and we cannot back out of it." Cheers were given for the speakers at the conclusion of the meeting.

It is notified that the lectures on first aid ' under the auspices of the St. John Am'bulance Association begin on; Wednesday evening next (to-morrow). Intending members are asked to notify tho hon. secretary*(Mrs W. Rogers) beforehand. It is trusted' that many will take advantage of the opportunity afforded by the lectures to gain knowledge on this important matter.

Owing to several engagements in the second week in June, the Red Cross monthly meeting will be held on Thursday. June Ist, instead ,"f Tuesday, June 6th.'

The Anchor Company announces that owing to the Patent Blip at Wellington not toeing available, the s.s. Kaitoa will leave here as usual for Wellington on Thursday, leaving Wellington on return next day. Saturday, being the King's Birthday, the Anchor Company will not have a. steamer leaving heTo «fo.r Wellington on Friday or Saturday next, bu,t the Nikau will sail for Wellington direct on Monday next at 7 p.m.
