A DISTRICT EFFORT.
THIS evening a pubKc meeting will be ; held to consider a district effort to raise £25,000 for the Sick and Wounded Fund. The population of Nelson city and adjacent districts from' Collingwood to Murchison is roughly about 24,000. Up to the present, so far as can be judged, for detailed figures are not available, this district has sent 1400 men to the front, and many hundreds more are to follow in due course. The interest on the money so far subscribed to the Sick and Wounded Fund will bring in about £lO I a week. This,, it -will be seen, will not go 'far in assisting returned soldiers in such ways where, in special circumstances, the | ordinary provisions of the State may not meet all the requirements. In the dis- : trict we have stated above, the contributions per head to the Sick and Wounded .Fund at present are 8s per head of population. 'Wanganui, a wealthier district than Nelson, in a recent effort, contributed something like £4 a head. . is being asked >to contribute about £1 a head. It will be seen, therefore, that if everyone in the Nelson district contributes according to his or her means, a considerable sum should be the result. We understand the • com- j mittee is going most carefully into the whole matter, and doubtless a satisfactory scheme will be evolved, '. but we would like to impress upon members that only harm will result if measures taken to secure the money become too drastic. It is for the people to attend to-night's meeting and express their views concerning what should be done, rather than, wait until a definite course of act-ion has been decided upon. .-■','.
