Prime Minister: —'I have learned Tvith feelings of great pleasure arid: interest that- a monument- to the raemorv of our brave soldifT sons from yonr district -who ,have fallen at GalliVtli is to be unveiled to-dav. __ The Slaori Tace, in common with their pakeha brothers, have taken up arms for their Kinsr and Empire in this great ■war against'the enomies of liberty and freedom, "and in the language of General Sir lan Hamilton have carved out a record of imperishable militarv valour on the- battlefields of Anzac. The Maori contingent have proved themselves brave and worthy descendants of their warrior ' ancestors, * and many have laid down their lives as soldiers of the King. For the brave who have fallen we irrieve. and our hearts go out in sympathv to their parents and relatives; but if we are to win in. this great war (as I am certain we shall) we must continue to dolour duty in sending our share of men and. helpino- our comrades Who are now at the 'front. The Maori Tace has responded nobly to th» Empire's call, but more- men are needed, and, sneakinsr as Prime Minister of the Dominion and as r-ead of the Government, I earnestly appeal to the chiefs of the Maori people A-> do their utmost to keen up the snppiv of reinforcements, which are so necessary at this juncture. I feel confident that the appenl.wili not be made in" vain and a Teady response -will bf made by the young 'men of the Maori race." Following the Irfid of the Northern tribe 3, the Maoris of the Taumarunui district have also decided to erect a memorial.
