By the last mail a "Christchurch firm received the following letter, dated sth January, from a London business house: —"There is considerable delay resulting from tbe present unfortunate state of aff%iaa in the shipment of goods, both from British and American ports, and we beg our clientele .to extend their loyalty in this matter and appreciate the' situation. For some weeks past, and it is forecasted for some weeks ahead, the \vhole of the transit arrangements, more especially to London, are required by the military authorities, and in consequence general merchandise is held up. There is a shortage of steamers offering, and this threatens to become more serious both here and from New York in the immediate future."
