CONTINUOUS TELEPHONE SERVICE

DEPARTMENT AND CHAMBER OF

COMMERCE

Mi W. T. Ward. Chief Postmaster, re feiring to the report in connection with the proceedings of the Chamber of Commerce which appeared in our issue of the 24th ult.. a paragraph of which read a* follows:—"The Chairman had moved in the direction of having a continuous telephone service, but had met with a nasty rebuff from Mr Rhodes, Post-master-General, who had not been polite in regard to this matter." states that the reason the Department declined the request of the Chamber of Commerce was that the appointment of a canvasser for such a purpose at Nelson would be a precedent for acceding to other requests of the same kind, and it was considered it would have been impolitic, therefore, for the Department to do what the Chamber i>: Commerce asked.
