Mr J. W. Slatter, -who died in Wellington the other ■ day, arrived in Nelson from England with J parents, in 1849, when only six years of age. He remained in. Nelson for nearly half a century, folio wing his business as a builder. In the 'sixties he accompanied many other Nelson residents to the Wakamarina goldfields, but met with little success. For'over 50 years he had been a member of Court- Robin Hood, A.O.F. , Sixteen years ago he -went to live in but took no active part in public life, being of a very reserved and retiring disposition. He leaves a widow and five daughters—Mrs L. B. joi'dan (Christchurch), Mrs A. Berry. (Wellington),. Mrs J. Henderson (Johnsbnville'), and. Miss M. M Slatter (Wellington) and 'four grandchildren.
